Conquering Blindness, Preserving Vision
One person goes blind every five seconds, a child loses vision every minute, and an estimated seven million people become visually handicapped each year globally, according to metrics compiled by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The disparity is deeply geographic: nearly 90 percent of the world's visually impaired individuals live in developing countries. Strikingly, nearly half of the global burden of blindness resides within India alone (approximately nine million people).
Blindness stands as one of the major health crises in India. Fortunately, 80% of this blindness is completely avoidable—primarily caused by cataracts, which are treatable through simple, safe surgical restoration of normal vision.
Lions clubs throughout the world are globally renowned for their systematic efforts in the prevention of avoidable blindness, which remains one of their signature, flagship service programs.
Keeping this noble mission in view, the Lions Club of Cuttack established the Melvin Jones Lions Eye Hospital at Khalasi Lane, Buxi Bazar, Cuttack. Our objective is to bring to the people of Odisha accessible, basic eye care services alongside advanced, essential surgical treatments.
